Life today is an excursion down a path of unfair realities.
Solomon in a sense bemoans this in Ecclesiastes chapter nine. He says that this is an unfair reality. The sense of his observation lies in the matter that in this world and this life, the wicked and righteous have equal access to the goods and blessings of this world and equal exposure to the distress of life.
The point is that you cannot assess your relationship to God or His approval by your experiences in life. In this life the Larry Flints and the Ted Turners may achieve success and wealth, while the Corrie ten Booms are cast into prison. The reward of the righteous is eternal, not temporal, and for that cause we live by faith.
And beyond this, Solomon urges us to enjoy this life and its opportunities as we give ourselves in selfless service to God.
