The Name of God

Often throughout the Scriptures we find reference to “the name of God”. Following is an example of what I mean:

1 Timothy 6:1 (KJV)

Let as many servants as are under the yoke count their own masters worthy of all honour, that the name of God and his doctrine be not blasphemed.

In examples such as this it seems that the issue is the reputation of God. I find it interesting to note that we as believers are the keepers of God’s reputation. Further we find that the keeping of that reputation is related to our own personal holiness.

G. Campbell Morgan says of that holiness that it has two aspects. The first is that of character, a personal acquisition of holiness that is housed within our hearts as a great appreciation and esteem for righteousness that is reflected in humbleness of mind.

The second aspect of that holiness is seen in our conduct, our behavior is changed through the power and influence of a changed character. This is the very essence of what it means to be sanctified. We as God’s children are a set-apart people for the glory, or may we say the “name of God”.

This is the great calling of God’s children today, may God help and enable us to be faithful keepers of His name.
