The Fear of God

In the twenty-eighth chapter of the book of Job, Job deliberates over the matter of wisdom and its value and where it can be found. He declares it as being far more valuable than any of the earth’s resources. In the end he says this about wisdom;

Job 28:28

And unto man he said, Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.

In my experience over the past forty years of ministry I have found a continual attempt within what seems to be popular Christianity to remove the fear of God. Much of this has come from the avenue of what is termed “Christian Psychology”. These folks persist in making much of man and little of God. They redefine “fear” with “respect” in an attempt to make God a more comfortable person. The result of this “comfort” is that we have a form of Christianity that refuses to depart from evil.

Proverbs 16:6

By mercy and truth iniquity is purged: and by the fear of the LORD men depart from evil.

God is who He is and when we begin to trim what we think are the course and rough edges of His nature we both lie and distort who He is. Man will never comprehend the person of God and to attempt to alter the pictures of Him given us in the Scriptures is both distortion and unfaithfulness. We would all do better with a great renewal of the “fear of God”.
