If I understand the book of Hebrews rightly, every day for the followers of Christ is the Sabbath. It seems that is the significance of “entering into His rest”. For the Old Testament believer the seventh day was particularly for the Lord. For those of us who follow Christ today, every day is particularly for the Lord. That is the sense of the following verse:
1 Corinthians 10:31
Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.
If I understand the Sabbath correctly, it seems it was not so much a prohibition of things as it was a mandate to respect and honor God. In the book of Numbers we have the account of a man who was stoned because he picked up sticks on the Sabbath. Picking up sticks was never isolated as a moral deviance. He could have been carrying water or playing baseball; his failure was to respect, honor and obey God. The Sabbath day was a special day, and for us as believers every day is an equally special day.
I wonder if we understand how sacred our lives are as the children of God and our obligation to live our lives to His glory. On the one side it is a heavy and immeasurable obligation on the other it is an immeasurable and unimaginable privilege. Which side of this great duty and privilege are you living on? It makes all the difference in the world!
