I have been doing a study on the subject of fruitfulness lately. I hope to uncork a series on it for Wednesday evenings soon. There really is a lot said about it in the Scriptures. Spring is a good illustration of fruitfulness.
This time of year I watch for every new bud on our trees, growth of plants and of course the recovery of a green lawn. It is also the time I choose to prune things like the trees and hedges to somehow attempt to direct their growth. Then I watch carefully hoping that I have not done something entirely stupid.
There is an old poem that my mother often quoted in the spring;
Spring is sprung,
The grass is ris,
I wonder where the flowers is?
It reminds me of the terrible results of depravity. The long winter of depravity rests so ugly on our lives and how we long for the fresh spring of new life in Christ to transform us into His likeness. We watch and long for every refreshing bud and shoot of new life. It reminds me of some Scripture we are presently memorizing:
John 15:5
I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.
How blessed are God’s children to have the promise of a new life in Christ.
