On Being Informed

Information is one thing, knowledge and understanding is quite another. It would seem to me that the real goal of education is not simply the acquisition of information, but rather a knowledge and understanding of what that information carries.

It seems to me that Christ confronted the accepted sophisticated teachers of His time on earth with this issue. While they had a good grasp on the facts and history of Israel and the Hebrew people, they failed to get the point. Notice this reference:

John 5:39
Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.

While these religious leaders poured over the Scriptures, they completely missed the issue of them. The major issue of the Scriptures is to give testimony and description to the person of God. Here before them was God in the flesh, the incarnate Second Person and they failed to recognize Him.

It amazes me today how folks manufacture their own image and description of God. What they do is “build” a god that they can be comfortable with. Out of the resources of their own reason and logic they develop a lopsided view of God that permits them to indulge in their own selfish pursuits.

God has revealed Himself in the Bible and only a thorough study of that book will produce a true understanding of who God is. It is a large and life long task. And it is the most rewarding task you can give yourself too. Notice these words of one who knew God far better that we do…

Philippians 3:8
Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ,
