We commonly grow up with a misguided notion that our happiness and contentment are determined by our circumstances. And you may quickly respond by saying of course it is. However, in reality, the Bible teaches that true happiness and contentment are a result of our response to our circumstances.
How happy are the folks who have been trained by their parents and the Bible to understand and practice this reality. It is so easy to get all caught up in our circumstances and fight with them and feel sorry for ourselves. There is a very simple guideline in Philippians chapter four that explains this to us:
Philippians 4:4-7
Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say, Rejoice.
Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand.
Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.
And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
A key to understanding this is the self-talk that is given to us in Psalm 103. It begins with, “Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me bless His holy name…”. If you are fighting the blues today, spend some time meditating on these Scriptures and find the real solution in our Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.
