I just finished reading a delightful pamphlet about heaven. It reminds me of a full-length book by David Hunt that I read years ago. Hunt’s book was titled, “Whatever Happened to Heaven”. In Hunt’s book he is observing how the believer’s focus had been steered away from the future hope of the saints to a more carnal appetite for the things of this world.
It was my conclusion then as it is now, that Hunt had it right. And since that time things have only gotten worse. The carnal appetites and temporal focus of professed believers has only grown over the past twenty or thirty years. It mirrors that horrendous saying, “what have you done for me lately”.
God has promised His people a future that is beyond measuring an adequate motive to secure our faithful service in these days. It is time to redirect our attention to the wonderful things that God has promised. It was popular back in the days that Hunt wrote, for carnal preachers to promote their errant focus with the statement that present believers, “were so heavenly minded that they were no earthly good”. That is an absolutely ungodly thing to say. It is God’s purpose for His people to be heavenly minded.
