Words and phrases work their way into our language that often in the end are only confusing and misleading. And we pick up these “sayings” and by them only promote more nonsense. Please excuse me while I blow off some steam this morning:
One hundred and ten percent! This language has come out of the sports world. In the last analysis it is not just impossible it is crazy. What if a wide receiver did give one hundred and ten percent on the play that the quarterback called? He wouldn’t have enough strength left to get back to the huddle. Now I know that it has just become an idiom for doing your best, but why do we so mindlessly pick up such nonsense?
Another word that has begun to bother me is “balance”. Balance has become the answer to too many things. Some things are not answered with balance. Balance is good on a bicycle but it doesn’t work in a lot of life circumstances. For instance, you cannot balance your good works with bad to get to heaven. God is not a God of balance, He is a God of one hundred percent. God demands all of man in all of his ways. Unfortunately, it appears that man today is attempting to live a life of religion that is measured by balance. And each man determines what that balance is. A percentage for God and a percentage for me! Notice what God says:
1 Corinthians 10:31Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.
That is not balance that is “one hundred percent”.
