A person’s choices will tell us much about them. We as a nation are watching closely the choices of the president-elect as he selects his potential cabinet members. As this process proceeds day by day we learn more about what this president’s real agenda will be. It also reveals to us what this president-elect appreciates and admires in others.
We can also learn much about God as we look at the choices that He has made. No choices would be more indicative of His values than the man and woman He chose to be the guardians of His Son. As we read the accounts of this in Matthew and Luke, it quickly comes to our attention that wealth, prestige and social position were not qualifiers in His choice. Joseph was a common laborer and Mary by her own admission was a very common and simple woman. In light of this, it makes me wonder at how much effort it seems we exercise to distinguish ourselves.
The prophet Isaiah spoke of these values of God in the last chapter of his book:
Isaiah 66:2 …to this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at my word.
Add to this the observation of Micah:
Micah 6:8
He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?
Success is far more a matter of what we are, than of what to do or accomplish!
