Look with me for a moment at an aging man’s observation regarding God’s gracious provision for His children. This observation comes from the pen of the Psalmist David:
Psalm 37:25 I have been young, and now am old; yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread.
This observation could be attached to many absolute promises throughout God’s Word regarding His provision for His own:
Philippians 4:19 But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.
I fear that sometimes we begin to think that this provision from God is somehow merit based rather than grace based. We begin to think that we are on the uncertain footing of having always to make the right decisions and be at the height of our skill and ability to merit His attention and provision. It is not that we ought to become sloppy and careless because of His grace, but the truth is that at our very best we still would never merit His favor.
God’s provision for us is found in the path of humility and trust. God’s chosen pilgrims on this earth unlike what Paul calls the “gentiles” are held in a position of absolute security. It is a security to rest in and enjoy as we follow our King.
