Doing Gospel Work

I am troubled at how little good thinking we do these days. It seems that most any hot-shot can come up with some plausible idea and like lemmings we hop on board with little or no critical thinking. One of my current concerns is how we have come to mix things political with the things of God. And this is no simple matter to distinguish. However, to me, we need simply to make some historical observations.

First, I would suggest that we view what a significant flop the entire “Moral Majority” idea has become. It was a noble effort to be sure, but not an effort that God was pleased to enhance with His blessing. In hindsight, it seems to me that the cause of the failure was an attempt to accomplish through the work of government, something that is rather to be done through the efforts of the church and God’s people.

With that in mind I would cite the significant success of the early church missionaries. Notice this observation from the world regarding the missionary work of the apostles:

Acts 17:6
And when they found them not, they drew Jason and certain brethren unto the rulers of the city, crying, These that have turned the world upside down are come hither also;

At this point the world was quite angry with how the gospel efforts of our forefathers had brought unwelcome change to their communities. I also believe that a sound view of American history will reveal that the founding of America had its roots in the wonderful results of what we call the “Great Awakening”. There was a great gospel shaking of our land in the 1700s under the hands of men like Jonathan Edwards and George Whitefield. The real answer to America’s need is not a better government, but rather a better people, a people that are godly, moral and men and women of character. Our government unfortunately is just a reflection of what we are as a people. What we need is better churches. Let us not blame our government for what we have become as a people.
