Assessing Our Calling

Published on 07/02/13

I have said much about our calling as God’s children over the past weeks and today I would like to contrast that with something that I think is a great diversion and error which we are caught up in these days. I begin with this statement: we have not been called to do nation work or to be politically active.

Historically our efforts in this arena have not been encouraging or at all effective. Think with me of the great hopes that were generated by the “Moral Majority” movement years ago. It was an utter flop. Yet we were so hopeful and even in some measure achieved some of the goals we set. After that we saw the remnants of this group do that “Contract with America”. Again we did achieve our ends in the election but failed in our hopes of redirecting our nation. Our place and power in the places that God has put us is not political but gospel. Our work is with the soil. It is hard and dirty work but that is where success is had. In the words of an Old Testament prophet, “…break up the fallow ground…”

It is my assessment that the writing of our American constitution and the organization of our nation were hugely successful because of the influence of the “Great Awakening”. If that is an accurate analysis, then what is needed today is not political pressure and work, but effective gospel work. However, as men, we always attempt to work from the top down with laws and such rather than work from the ground up with what could be termed a revival. It becomes our efforts rather than a true work of faith and obedience. We still have the Scriptures, we still have the Holy Spirit, we still have a loving and compassionate God, let us do things His way!
