The most profitable work a Christian can do is unfortunately often the most neglected and that is the work of the soul. Solomon put it in these words:
Proverbs 4:23
Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life. (KJV)
We are warned in the Scriptures that a man's life does not consist in the abundance of the things that he possesses but rather in the state of his soul and as Christians we have been uniquely equipped to do the work of the soul by the presence of the Holy Spirit and the application of the Word. There is not a more valuable use of your time and energy than the cultivation of the fruits of the Spirit by the Word of God. It is this activity that leads to ultimate satisfaction and contentment.
These are not the days for acquisition of worldly goods and experiences. These are the days set apart by Christ for us to bring glory to God by the fruits of righteousness. The promises and provisions of the new covenant are all aimed at this solitary objective. It is an abuse of Scripture to attempt to twist God's blessed New Testament promises into a pursuit of carnal wealth. And what fools we would be to pursue the wealth of this world when a far greater prize is available to us in the likeness of His dear Son. I encourage you to begin to seek and enjoy the blessed fruits of the Spirit:
Galatians 5:22-24
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. (KJV)
