Something Solid Stand On

Years ago I had the privilege to do some backpacking and canoeing through the Boundary Waters of northern Minnesota and southern Canada. I remember well on some of those portages getting caught in the middle of a swamp. Having a sixty-pound pack or even a seventy-pound canoe on my shoulders made me eager to find a solid place to set my feet.

I find a similar situation facing life these days. Looking for something solid to help me make good decisions. And if we as believers find ourselves searching for solid ground how much more must those without Christ find themselves bogged down in a world of confusion. In a world that owns no authority apart from the fickle nature and reason of man; a world that has no absolute standard of truth and justice; a world that has no absolute standard of morality; a world that is now questioning the reality of two distinct sexes; where do you find solid ground?

Oh, how I love that blessed book the Bible. It is the sole source of truth. Following is a poem that I have secured in a flyleaf of my Bible:

MY OLD BIBLE
Though the cover is worn,
And the pages are torn,
And though places bear traces of tears,
Yet more precious than gold
Is this Book worn and old,
That can shatter and scatter my fears.

This old Book is my guide,
‘Tis a friend by my side,
It will lighten and brighten my way;
And each promise I find
Soothes and gladdens the mind,
As I read it and heed it each day.

To this Book I will cling,
Of its worth I will sing,
Though great losses and crosses be mine;
For I cannot despair,
Though surrounded by care,
While possessing this blessing Divine.

An old hymn writer put it this way, “We have a blessing the keeps the soul…” How eagerly I look forward to my morning coffee and my time in the Word, it is the best time of every day.
