Parable of the Mustard Seed

The parable of the mustard seed and the parable of the leaven are the same in their meaning and focus. They are not at all unlike the two dreams that the Pharaoh had that Joseph interpreted for him. These parables reveal to us what the condition will be of the earthly manifestation of God’s business in the latter end of it.

The birds in the mustard plant and the leaven in the bread reveal to us that in the last times corruption will be prevalent within what we know today as the churches. This is indeed a disheartening revelation. However we can see the same thing in Christ’s messages to the churches in the book of Revelation. Several of these churches had become in a very short period of time quite corrupted. We see the same in the nation of Israel how she over very short periods of time corrupted herself with greed, idolatry and grievous sins.

This brings us to a very important issue that Christ brought to His people often, “watch”. It is our business as the followers of Christ to watch. This means that we are to exercise a careful attention to both our practice and to our doctrine. None of us would wish to be those who would have to give account for a carelessness in our attention to God’s business.

In today’s world we are so given to ambition for growth and expansion, while it appears we give little attention to holiness and fidelity. We are not permitted to sacrifice holiness for popularity and acceptance. God’s business is not an easy business.
