Living in Comfort

Published on 11/07/11

There are some concepts and notions in life that are very hard to correct. They amount to assumptions about life that are just wrong. One such assumption is that you know what is best for you! I suppose the most common approach to life today is to just do and be what it is that you want to do and be. What that approach fails to acknowledge is that man is fallen and with that his intelligence, reason and logic is at best quite faulty. How else can you account for so much unhappiness, pain, despair and general disruption of life. This highly touted freedom of choice seems not to be bringing its expected result. I do not suggest that we eliminate freedom of choice, rather I would urge a much fuller educated and informed choice. For instance what about this familiar Scripture passage:

Proverbs 16:25 There is a way that seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.

This verse has in a way haunted me throughout the years. It makes me fear the abilities and inclinations of my own judgment. Often we sit at a crossroad in life much like what Robert Frost described in his famous poem, “Two Roads”. This Scripture verse cautions me to doubt the integrity of my own thoughts and to submit my hopes and desires to One who cares more deeply and sincerely for me than I can even for myself. If we would live comfortably it is imperative that we follow His ways for they are always best.

James 4:8-10 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded. Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness. Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.
