God’s mercy is a subject that just absolutely transcends our poor ability to comprehend it. The songwriter in the old hymn, “The Love of God” attempted to achieve a description of His mercy and love that is likely as good as any attempt that has been made. However, the best understanding of His mercy is really only comprehended by those who have tasted of it. I am told that it was A. W. Tozer that said, 'no man can be greatly used of God until he is greatly broken', and I would think that it is equally true that no man can understand God’s mercy until he is greatly broken.
In this context notice with me this verse from an Old Testament prophet:
Hosea 6:1 Come, and let us return unto the LORD: for he hath torn, and he will heal us; he hath smitten, and he will bind us up.
It is God who by his grace shows us the utter corruption of ourselves that we might fall upon His compassionate mercy. It grieves me to see how men and women hold so tenaciously to their carnal “self-respect” to the loss of a wonderful peace and joy that comes from instead falling upon God’s mercy.
Lamentations 3:21-24 This I recall to my mind, therefore have I hope. It is of the LORD's mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness. The LORD is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him.
Are you resting in God’s mercy or your own good works and intentions? God’s mercy is a place of unhindered and forever secure rest.
