I was thinking on this, this morning and decided to check out what Webster has to say about the word “good”. Following are just a few of Webster’s observations:
1) suitable to a purpose; effective; efficient:
2) fresh; unspoiled; uncontaminated:
3) valid; genuine; real:
4) healthy; strong; vigorous; sound:
5) honorable; worthy:
6) enjoyable, agreeable, happy:
7) dependable; reliable; right:
8) thorough:
9) adequate; ample; sufficient; satisfying:
10) morally sound or excellent;
What an immeasurable and happy circumstance it is that God is good. Henry Thiessen states that this goodness of God is found in the following four expressions of His nature; the love of God; the benevolence of God; the mercy of God and the grace of God.
How immeasurably unhappy mankind would be if God were not good. I reflect on the stability of our annual seasons, the daily arrival of the sun, the rains that bring the fruitfulness of the earth. Often I reflect on what it would be like if God delivered to man at each instant what man deserves! Rather in His goodness He is patient and kind. And above and beyond all of this He has provided His own Son to pay the price of our sin and guilt. When we read in the Scriptures or express with our own lips that God is good; it is to say, “a mouth full”.
