It is the first of the year and I am again, challenging our folks to read through the Bible in the coming year. I believe that reading stands alone as the greatest source of education. It has been said that, “readers will be leaders”. As I wander through the pages of history, I consistently find that influential men and women have been prolific readers. It is by reading that we can acquaint ourselves with the foundations of life and the principles upon which life turns. The more we read, the more information we have to compare and contrast.
My purpose in this article is to encourage you to read the Bible. It seems that we often read about the Bible, read commentaries on the Bible, read biographies about Bible characters, but none of this will substitute for reading “the” Bible. Think with me about this: God is the ultimate author. He stands alone as the sole master of presenting truth in the correct context and in the correct form. This being granted we will find that the Bible is the richest source for a full and true education. I am encouraging you to expose yourself to this treasure for the coming year. Examine how God related to man and how man related to God.
It is certain that some have much greater capacity for reading. I am amazed at the amount of material that some can consume in a relatively short period of time and have the ability to recall it at will. I must admit that I covet that ability. However, whatever our ability be we ought to use it to its fullest extent. Read it, meditate on it and apply it to your life and circumstances.
Psalm 19:7-11 7 The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple. 8 The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes. 9 The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring for ever: the judgments of the LORD are true and righteous altogether. 10 More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb. 11 Moreover by them is thy servant warned: and in keeping of them there is great reward.
