Economics, A Biblical View

Published on 01/26/09

You may be surprised to learn that the Bible has a lot to say about the matter of economics. A simple and acceptable definition of economics is: the science of the production, distribution and consumption of wealth. At the very root of this study is the matter of resources. Our conclusions about resources will shape much of our view of economics. Here is just a sampling of what God’s Word says about resources:

Psalm 24:1 The earth is the LORD’S, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein.

God’s supply of resources to us not skimpy or penurious. The Bible word by contrast is “fullness”. It is a faulty knowledge of God to imagine that He would supply us with a skimpy pantry. Notice what Peter says:

2 Peter 1:3 According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:

Here we see that God has supplied us with all things that pertain unto life, not some or a few but all things! In the world of economics the contrasting words are finite and infinite. And we can affirm that as for this world and its needs God’s supply is infinite. If there be any lack whatever, it is in our science, industry or governing laws, not in God’s supply. The real challenge is not to conserve but rather to produce. It is the noose around the neck of production that causes want. Solomon goes into the causes of that noose in the fifth chapter of Ecclesiastes. It is a marvelous and beneficial study.
