Christmas and Gifts

Published on 12/14/15

Have you ever wondered how it is that we have decided to celebrate Christmas by exchanging gifts? That is exactly what the world will do in the future to celebrate the death of the two witnesses in Jerusalem during the tribulation. Now I don’t mean to impugn the tradition of gift exchange by that association. I am just recognizing that it seems to be a “natural” inclination of man to celebrate by giving gifts.

Birthdays as an example are celebrated by giving gifts. I can understand it in the context of those who are moving past the age of sixty. Gifts then would be some kind of condolence for the pain of aging. For the young it makes sense to catch up with outgrown clothes. Maybe I am just in my “Scrooge” mind today.

However, here is a gift idea for this Christmas. Use this opportunity to encourage and help fellow believers in their pursuit of the Christian life. Spurgeon’s book “Morning and Evening” is a gift that will keep on giving all year long. Pink’s book on the “Attributes of God” is a candy cane that never runs out. These are just two examples of books that can be read for twenty minutes or less and will bring satisfaction and contentment to the soul all day long. What better gift could you give?
