In our deacon meeting last evening a deacon made an interesting observation.
This observation comes in the form of an argument. If good works and righteous living earned our salvation, would it not be worth a life-long commitment to righteousness to earn that salvation? In light of the terrors of eternal damnation would we not all answer that question in the affirmative? Now while our salvation is not acquired by good works, is it not true that God has chosen to use our good works to attract others to Himself?
Matthew 5:16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
In this context would it not be worth our fullest efforts to live consistent Christian lives so that others may see Christ and be saved.
2 Corinthians 3:3 Forasmuch as ye are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in fleshy tables of the heart.
It is likely true that one of the most loving things we can do for our friends, neighbors and relatives is to live a consistent Christian life and testimony.
