Philippians 2:5 (KJV) Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:
I have been exercised over the past few months to more carefully consider the incarnation. While as fundamentalists we hold to solid theological positions, understanding and appreciating them is another matter entirely. As good theologians and also in reaction to so much bad theology that deprecates the true deity of Jesus Christ I think we often fail to give due consideration to the humanity of Christ. Jesus endured the trials and testing of this world and even the crucifixion as a man. There is a rather haunting verse of Scripture in this regard in the book of Matthew:
Matthew 16:23 (KJV) But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men.
What a stern rebuke Peter receives here. As I ponder on this and the matter of the word 'offence', it would seem to me that Christ is saying, "Peter, it is hard enough for me to keep on track in this matter and your implications of avoiding the very purpose for which I have come are no help whatsoever." This idea would seem consistent with Christ’s prayer in the garden regarding “this cup passing from Him”. Our Savior exhausted extreme effort in His journey to the cross and He did it as a man for our sake. Understanding this accentuates His role as a model for the believer.
It seems we all too often whine about the cross we are required to carry for Him. It helps me to reflect on the great sacrifice and effort He expended for us as I face the challenges He places before me everyday. It is the commitment to endure all things for His sake:
Hebrews 12:2 (KJV) Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
