A Letter of Commendation

Through the years I have often been asked to submit a letter of commendation for some of our youth. It may have been regarding a job or college admission. It is a letter that is intended to reflect the nature, skills and integrity of the young person. I have always taken this responsibility very seriously.

It amazes me that as God’s children we are in the place of not writing, but actually being, a letter of commendation for the Savior. Notice this declaration from the apostle Paul:

2 Corinthians 3:3 Forasmuch as ye are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in fleshy tables of the heart.

If we connect this with our assignment of “bringing glory to God” we will find that we have a very important calling with regard to how God is viewed in our world today.

One of the big hurtles we have in the work of evangelism is the great antipathy, if not disrespect, that is held toward God today. That hurtle is one that bears upon us and it is a life of holiness and righteousness that alone can cross or negotiate this obstacle. And I would like to suggest that it is greatly the corporate and aggregate testimony of professed believers that is really an issue today. We live in a time when the believers in our world are so very much like the world and it is not that the world is getting better. There needs to be a very clear distinction between the believers and the world and that distinction cannot be solely theological, it must be a matter of nature and practice.

If we really want revival one of the personal prices we will have to pay is the price of holiness and righteousness.
