The Mystery of Providence

Published on 06/08/09

Providence is that doctrine within the pages of the Bible that teaches clearly and without apology that God has determined the course of this world and the course of our individual lives. The magnitude of this doctrine is staggering. To begin to contemplate and understand that God is actively attentive to the lives of all men and even all creatures (He says that even a sparrow does not fall to the ground without his notice and attention) challenges even our wildest imaginations about who and what this God is. It is this very God who calls upon us to love and trust Him.

In this context I must quote this Scripture:

Romans 8:32

He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?

How very different our lives would be if we would acknowledge at every turn and event of life that God was lovingly active and calling upon us to trust Him. If only we understood that in all our circumstances the only correct response was faith and obedience to God. The doctrine of God’s providence is a secure place to live and to thrive within. Providence is a place to rest!

Psalm 113:4-9

The LORD is high above all nations, and his glory above the heavens.

Who is like unto the LORD our God, who dwelleth on high,

Who humbleth himself to behold the things that are in heaven, and in the earth!

He raiseth up the poor out of the dust, and lifteth the needy out of the dunghill;

That he may set him with princes, even with the princes of his people.

He maketh the barren woman to keep house, and to be a joyful mother of children. Praise ye the LORD.
