It must be admitted that we live in a world that worships the big, and the popular. It reminds me of what God said to Jeremiah’s servant:
Jeremiah 45:5 And seekest thou great things for thyself? seek them not: for, behold, I will bring evil upon all flesh, saith the LORD: but thy life will I give unto thee for a prey in all places whither thou goest.
Notice also this excerpt from the book of Zechariah:
Zechariah 4:10 For who hath despised the day of small things? for they shall rejoice, and shall see the plummet in the hand of Zerubbabel with those seven; they are the eyes of the LORD, which run to and fro through the whole earth.
This text is interesting because it says that those who “despise the day of small things” will have a plumb line laid beside them and will be found “out of plumb”.
It is my observation that altogether too many compromises have been made in our churches today in an attempt to be big and popular. While all the time our Savior has said:
Matthew 7:14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.
We have the obligation to manage our desire for evangelism within the confines of sound doctrine and practice. Where we draw the line on this issue will likely always be a matter of contention, but draw the line we must. It will help if we remember that the requirement upon a steward is faithfulness and the blessing upon faithfulness is appropriate fruitfulness. God’s people have always been a remnant.
