Spirituality is a term we are hearing more about these days. The meaning of it is dependent upon the person using it. Some would define it as being more tuned into the emotional and intellectual side of life, folks that tend to be more sensitive or contemplative. The converse of this would be folks who are more driven by the materialism of our age and hooked on achieving success and wealth.
Spirituality from the world's point of view does not necessarily take into consideration any knowledge of or even consideration for God. The Bible account of spirituality is quite different. In the Scriptures spirituality is well defined as a realization of the true God and a growing understanding of Him. It is a divorcement from the common passions of this life as a directive force or priority and a new attachment to the purposes and glory of God.
True spirituality is answered in what is the real passion and purpose of our lives. True spirituality answers the question who are we and what is the purpose for our drawing the next breath. The apostle Paul put it in these terms:
Philippians 3:7-14
But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ.
Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ,
And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith:
That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death;
If by any means I might attain unto the resurrection of the dead.
Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus.
Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before,
I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. (KJV)
Spirituality is all about why you bother to take the next breath. Is it to satisfy yourself or to bring glory to your God? You can answer this question, are you spiritual?
