Place and Purpose

There is a general theme that runs throughout the teaching of Jesus in the gospels and is continued throughout the epistles. This particular theme that I am speaking about has to do with the place and purpose of God’s redeemed or as we may better say His children. The same theme is represented by many of our gospel hymns such as an old favorite; “This World is not my Home”. Capturing this idea and living by it is a lifetime project and effort. This world constantly attempts to divert our attention to what Solomon so accurately termed “vanity”.

Notice with me this clear statement by Jesus Christ:

John 15:16 Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.

You will notice in this verse that our clear place and purpose is to bring forth fruit unto God and that our prayers also are to reflect that purpose. The issue of prayer here I find very interesting. If you examine your prayers I suspect that you will find that their primary focus and subject is not fruit unto God, but rather reflect your particular perceived needs and wants. Compare that to these words of Christ in Matthew:

Matthew 6:33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

How is it that you think about your life with Christ? Is He your servant to make your time and existence here more pleasant, or are you His servant to advance His purpose here?

2 Corinthians 5:20 Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ’s stead, be ye reconciled to God.
