Physical Versus Spiritual

I am an old “shade-tree” mechanic. I grew up in the age of mechanical things rather than electronic things. During those years of mechanical things problems in our cars could be traced physically to understand their cause and rather easily repaired. Things like a broken wire or an out-of-adjustment carburetor were really quite easily found and corrected. Today however there is often no physical relationship between the controls we use in our cars and the effect from those controls.

It reminds me of what it means to be what the Bible term as “spiritual”. There is a spiritual link that makes all the difference in people.

Romans 8:6 (KJV)

For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.

The carnal mind is a reference to someone who is physically linked to the desires, pleasures and values of this world, whereas the spiritually minded man is linked to heaven and the values of eternity. It is this reality that makes all the difference in a person’s behavior. A spiritual man is really quite a sophisticated machine.

Paul references this sophistication in 1Corinthians:

1 Corinthians 2:15 (KJV)

But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man.

If you insert the word “understands and understood” for the word “judgeth and judged” you will get the idea that a spiritual man understands far more about life than the carnal man and those who are carnal around him just cannot understand him.

It leads me to his question, are you physically bound to the foolish dynamics of this world or are you walking with Christ in the Spirit? That is what makes all the difference.
