Among our Jewish friends at the Passover time there is a passionate lament that goes like this, “Next year in Jerusalem”. It is the expression that looks forward to the advent of the Messiah and the hope that in the next year they will celebrate the Passover in Jerusalem. It is unfortunate that so many of our Jewish friends have failed to recognize that the Messiah has come and has redeemed us from our sins.
However it is equally true that the Messiah is going to return and in this Second Advent He will come in strength and establish His kingdom on this earth. A hymn writer expressed this coming time in these words:
“This is the Christian’s hope and like a beacon in the night, it still sends forth its light to make our pathway bright…”
So for us this year as we celebrate the First Advent it may be good for us to express our own passion, “Next Year in Jerusalem”. “What a Day that will be…”
