Fatalism, n. 1. The belief that all events are determined by fate and are therefore inevitable. *
*Webster’s New World Dictionary, College Edition, 1960
There is a blessed sense in which a true Bible believer is a fatalist. We have come to understand that God has by his wisdom, love and omniscience predetermined the course of this world. For those who have set themselves to truly know the Scriptures there is no doubt as to how things will end in this world. We also have the confidence that all things will hold together until that time. We are not left to wring our hands in worry or uncertain anticipation about future events.
The believer has the same confidence about his own personal future knowing that God has promised both his present care and a wonderful future for eternity. This past Sunday the following Scripture was brought to our attention by Pastor Weber:
Psalm 119:89 For ever, O LORD, thy word is settled in heaven.
I have to chuckle as I see our politicians and world leaders attempt to take on matters that are clearly out of their jurisdiction (i.e. weather). They do this it seems to hide the fact that they have consistently failed in the matters that are clearly their responsibility such as justice, equity and financial responsibility.
For those of us who know Christ and know the Scriptures we can be confident about all of these matters, even that justice and fair-play will be in our future when Christ comes back to govern the earth. In a real sense we live in the reality of a “Blessed Fatalism”.
