Matthew 25:1-13
Procrastination appears to be a common malady. There are many reasons for this illness. I find myself often putting off difficult and uncomfortable tasks. The one that I am avoiding right now is my annual tax preparation. I often come up against that dreaded date, April 15th. It is a real shame to associate the pleasantness of spring with such an unwelcome task!
In the parable of the Ten Virgins, it appears there were five procrastinators in the group. It is my observation that they are representative of those who put off the necessary work of repentance. Repentance is the thoughtful and careful work of accepting the reality of our lost condition and our guilt, confessing it and taking up what Christ spoke of as “our cross” and following Him. Let’s face the truth on this matter, any thoughtful man knows that he cannot confess his sin and seek God’s forgiveness without also abandoning his sinful ways. Salvation is a costly choice. Those five virgins who had not purchased a supply of oil, just didn’t want to pay the price. They however in the end paid a much greater price; they were shut out of the eternal blessings of God.
So what is it that is so dear to you that you are risking your eternal destiny?
2 Corinthians 6:2 (For he saith, I have heard thee in a time accepted, and in the day of salvation have I succoured thee: behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.)
